District Judge Julia E. Kobick: ELECTRONIC ORDER entered. The petitioners designated this case as related to Sampiao v. Hyde, No. 25-cv-11981-JEK, 2025 WL 2607924 (D. Mass. Sept. 9, 2025), when they filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus under 28 U.S.C. § 2241. ECF 1-7. In their abbreviated response to the habeas petition, the respondents contend, pursuant to Local Rule 40.1(g)(6)(A) and (g)(8), that the case was improperly designated as related because it does not meet the criteria for related cases set forth in Local Rule 40.1(g)(1). ECF 7, at 1, 3 n.4. The Court agrees with the respondents that this case is not related to Sampiao. It does not involve the same or substantially similar issues of fact, it does not arise out of the same transaction or occurrence, and it does not involve insurance coverage for the same property, transaction, or occurrence. See Local Rule 40.1(g)(1)(B). The only apparent connection between this petition and the petition in Sampiao is that the cases involve the same questions of law and the same government policy, but this Court's Local Rules make clear that cases should not be designated as related simply because they involve common questions of law or a similar challenge to a government policy or practice. See Local Rule 40.1(g)(3). Nor is the petitioners' relatedness designation warranted as furthering the interests of justice or the efficient performance of the business of the Court under Local Rule 40.1(j)(1). Judges across this Court have addressed, and are capable of addressing, the legal questions presented by this petition. Accordingly, it is hereby ORDERED that this case be randomly re-drawn.
